It was 2 Years Ago Today…

Bookcase
I have always been fond of celebrating minor successes.

The first record I owned, Stars on 45: The Beatles, if you must know, was a prize I won at the school end of year party. I won it by winning a disco dancing competition. This remains the one and only prize I have won for dancing, which if you have ever been unfortunate enough to watch me dance, you will know is just as it should be. It was in many ways a triumph that a boy with two left feet should win such a contest, but I knew enough even then to know it would never be classified as anything more than a “minor success”.

But celebrating life’s minor successes is something I am all for. Didn’t burn the toast this morning? Give yourself a pat on the back. Manage to smile at the boss this morning without him/her noticing how hungover you were? Give yourself an extra hour of sleep at the desk. Kids in bed without a major scene? Crack open that second bottle of champagne…

Today is the second anniversary of Every Record Tells A Story. A minor, but satisfying landmark. Since that first tentative post – which mentioned the disco dancing story – nearly three hundred posts have followed. It’s a colossal waste of time if you look at it in one way, but on the other hand it’s MY colossal waste of time, and I thank you for dropping by, reading the odd article from time to time and sharing the pain…

It feels like I should be taking stock and reflecting on the last couple of years, but life is too busy for all that. There’s some more stuff to write on people like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Son House and Led Zeppelin. Temples have a new album out soon. And The Horrors. Beck’s new record sounds amazing – I can’t wait to hear the album. Classic Rock Magazine has been back in touch – for a small piece in the magazine this time, and who knows what other fun things might be in store?

Like I said, minor successes. And all worth celebrating in one way or another. Thanks again for checking in: there’ll be something new to celebrate on Every Record Tells A Story tomorrow.

Well happy 2nd Anniversary! You know what, I don’t think this is a waste of time. If it brings you joy that’s all that matters and since other people enjoy reading it, I’d say you’re doing the world a service. With rock.

You remember those first few visitors in the early days (or weeks in my case) when you have 4 followers and get excited about finally hitting that elusive 5! 🙂 I think many give up too soon because we all seem to get better as we go on here. Cheers!

it’s great fun…i love to read it…especially looking forward to what you’ll say about the new beck and horrors….sea change is still a fave, and only today i was thinking of getting the vinyl of it,which i’m told is a really good pressing.

Thank you – I have the 180g reissue of Sea Change rather than the original and it is superb. One of my favourite albums. I’d recommend the pressing.

that sound labs thing?…i’ve been chasing it but its hard to find…wish i had have bought it when it was fresh off the press..i got the sound labs pressing of stevie’s inner visions and it sounds so great…i hear they did the rickie lee jones debut too,and i might go for that….freaking out about how much old music i’m listening to right now instead of new things…the only newish thing that’s really grabbed me is john grant.

That’s the one, yes. I hear good things about the Bowie 40th anniversary of Ziggy, but on the other hand I have the original…

the odd thing is sometimes they do vinyl re-pressings from recent digital masterings, which misses the point of everything, but those ones that are freshly re-mastered in a total analogue process from the original tapes are so lovely…i have the the ziggy thing one and it’s nice, but it does sound different from the ones we bought in 1972…t-rex’slider’ sounds very different to me..i think visconti added subtle mastering reverbs to brighten it up,which is fun,but in the box set i wish they’d have just done that on the cd,and kept the vinly exactly as it was.

I don’t have the original Sea Change, but I couldn’t be happier with the one I have. Do you have an example of a great repress that you have? They seem to be quite uncommon.

stevie wonders fulfillingness first finale is the best i ever heard…..i agree..i’m only beginning to realise how rare good pressings are.the mobile fidelity sound lab company who did the beck sea change seem to be the best people.i’ve ordered their pressing of rickie lee jones debut spread across two discs…it’s awful expensive though..i can’t afford too much of this.

The Led Zep ones that are about to come out, for example have been remastered by Jimmy Page from the original tapes, but there is some sort of high-res digital processing mentioned…

yeah..if its been digitised, its been digitised, and no amount to 180 gm vinyl can change that…jimmy is always at the helm of the led zep re-masters,but how much can jimmy truly know about rocket science?…that to me is marketing..he’s simply a brilliant guitar player…maybe he’s just there to make sure the mastering engineer doesn’t geek out on his sound.
